ChatGPT Is the Answer Agent. shopperGPT Is the Discovery Agent. And It’s Live.
That’s the news. The longer story is what makes it worth installing.
What just changed in commerce search
For 25 years, “search” on a merchant store meant one thing: a keyword bar at the top of the page. The shopper types “blue dress.” The bar matches against product titles. A grid comes back. The shopper scrolls, refines, gives up, or gets lucky.
That model worked because Google had trained shoppers to type keywords and accept what came back.
Two things broke that model in 2024–2025.
First, ChatGPT proved that people don’t actually want to type keywords. Given a choice, they’d rather describe what they want in plain English and have the system figure out the rest. ChatGPT became the most successful consumer software product in history because it inverted the discovery interface — from keyword query to natural-language conversation.
Second, AI-driven shopping traffic grew +1,200% in eight months (Adobe Analytics). McKinsey estimates AI search will boost conversion 15–25%. Euromonitor projects $595B+ in retail e-commerce will be influenced by AI search by 2028.
Between those two trends, the keyword bar on a merchant’s storefront went from “industry standard” to “the technology costing the merchant 82% of their traffic to search abandonment” (Google Research).
Answer agent vs. Discovery agent
There’s a useful frame for what’s happening.
ChatGPT is an 𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐭. You ask a question. It returns an answer. The interaction collapses what used to take five Google searches and four browser tabs into one conversational round.
𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐆𝐏𝐓 is a 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐭. You describe what you’re looking for. It surfaces the products from the merchant’s catalog that match — by intent, by color, by image similarity, or by intent + color combined. The interaction collapses what used to take fifteen keyword refinements and three “sort by price” clicks into one conversational round.
Same pattern. Different job.
Both are conversational interfaces. Both replace keywords with intent. Both work because the underlying AI can finally understand what the user actually means, not just what they typed. The difference is that ChatGPT retrieves information from the internet. 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐆𝐏𝐓 retrieves products from a specific merchant’s catalog — keeping discovery, intent data, and the customer relationship on the merchant’s own storefront.
What’s in the app
For a Shopify fashion merchant installing today, 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐆𝐏𝐓 enables four kinds of search that didn’t exist on Shopify before:
— 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥-𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡. A shopper types: “I’m looking for a jumpsuit for a special occasion, dressy material like silk or satin, dark color like black or navy, fitted waist, wide-leg pants.” The app parses garment type, occasion, formality, color intent, silhouette — and returns the matching products. Even price filters can be included inside the natural-language query.
— 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡. Not “red.” 16 million shades, color picker-driven, with real-time embedding matches against actual product imagery. The difference between coral and salmon. Forest green and olive. Slate and steel blue.
— 𝐌𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡. A shopper selects a dusty rose color and types “midi dress, flowy, casual.” Both signals are honored simultaneously.
— 𝐈𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡. A shopper takes a picture or uploads a screenshot from Instagram. The app understands silhouette, garment type, color palette, styling — and surfaces visually similar items from the merchant’s catalog. No tagging required.
What the lift looks like
Research indicates that expected merchant gains from deploying AI-native discovery fall in the range of:
- +20–30% conversion lift on AI-discovered traffic
- +5–10% average order value
- 10–20% reduction in bounce and search-abandonment
Those numbers are consistent with the broader industry data. AI-driven discovery converts at 4x+ the rate of traditional organic search. Shopify itself disclosed in Q1 2026 that catalog-powered AI search converts at 2x the rate of scraped-data AI search. 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐆𝐏𝐓 is the on-store discovery layer that lets a merchant capture both — onsite-AI conversion lift, and AI-readability for the agents off-site.
The platform behind it
𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐆𝐏𝐓 is the engine that powers the 𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐀𝐈 platform — patent-pending, with 34 claims covering its search and process architecture. It’s also the first 𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐀𝐈 product in the Shopify App Store. Three more are queued behind it, built on the same engine:
- 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐆𝐏𝐓 — AI-native search and discovery. Live in the App Store today.
- 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐆𝐏𝐓 — catalog enrichment and supplier-data cleanup, structured attributes. Running in production today on custom deployments, including Cassie’s Kurations. Next up in the App Store.
- 𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐆𝐏𝐓 — AI-agent visibility for catalogs across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and the UCP layer. In development; App Store submission to follow.
- 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐨𝐆𝐏𝐓 — virtual try-on for shoppers. In development; App Store submission to follow.
Plus an expanded developer plan that includes API access across the platform — including APIs for building on ChatGPT Apps.

Plans start at $39 with a 7-day free trial. Enterprise plans available for larger merchants.
Why this is worth installing
The keyword bar is the last unfixed piece of the 2010 e-commerce stack. Every other part of the funnel — paid ads, email, recommendations, post-purchase, inventory — has had its AI moment. Search has stayed broken on most independent merchant sites. As of today, on Shopify, it doesn’t have to.
And the clock matters. The answer agents that shoppers are already living inside — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot — are not staying answer agents. 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐲 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬. When that transition completes, every merchant without an AI-native discovery layer on their own store becomes inventory for someone else’s checkout flow. The lift from putting a discovery agent on your own storefront isn’t just conversion math — it’s the only structural play left to keep the customer relationship on your side of the table.
The merchants who put a discovery agent on their store this quarter will know in 90 days whether the lift is real. The ones who wait are betting AI commerce will slow down before it speeds up.
Which way are you betting?
